From Shaving Cream Spelling to Software Engineering:
A Mi Escuelita Alumnus Reflects
The colorful classrooms of Mi Escuelita may seem worlds away from the rigors of college graduation, but for one alumnus, the path between those two milestones is clear.
“My most vivid memories are of Ms. Sosa and Ms. Sólis,” the alumnus recalls, their faces lighting up as they describe the teachers who made Mi Escuelita a “home away from home.” The giant stuffed snake used as a naptime reward, the soothing eyebrow massages... these small acts of care fostered a sense of safety and belonging essential for a young learner.
This foundation, the alumnus believes, ignited a lifelong love of learning. “Mi Escuelita showed me that education could be fun,” they explain. “Spelling my name in shaving cream didn’t feel like work!” This playful approach made learning exciting and encouraged curiosity, a mindset that served them well throughout their academic journey.

Beyond academics, Mi Escuelita instilled the value of community. “We are stronger and better together,” the alumnus emphasizes, a lesson they continue to cherish.
Reflecting on their preschool days, the alumnus offers a simple yet profound message to their younger self: “If you like something, explore it! That spark of interest can turn into a passion.” This advice rings true for current Mi Escuelita students as well. “Be respectful and nice to your teachers,” the alumnus urges. “They will leave a tremendous mark on your journey.”
The alumnus’s own path to higher education was solidified by a pivotal moment: helping their older brother move into his dorm at UNT. “I marveled at his new chapter,” they share, “and it made me more excited for my future.”

College presented challenges, but the alumnus found solace in the friendships fostered at Mi Escuelita. “We were encouraged to connect with our classmates,” they explain, “and as an adult, I still turn to friends to get through tough times.”

Though their dreams have evolved since preschool, the alumnus’s ambition remains strong. “Mi Escuelita never made me feel like an aspiration was too big or out of reach,” they say. This boundless optimism led them to pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer science, a field they hope to use to “enlighten others with technological literacy.”

“Technology is the future,” the alumnus declares, emphasizing the importance of bridging the digital divide and promoting online safety. Their passion for education shines through in their desire to give back to Mi Escuelita, both through volunteer work and advocacy.

As for the future, the alumnus hopes to repay their parents for their unwavering support, embark on a rewarding career as a software engineer, and continue championing Mi Escuelita’s mission. “I will always be grateful for the boost they gave me,” the alumnus says with a smile. “It’s hard to believe I’m no longer a student, but I’m excited to see where this path leads.”

This alumnus’s story is a testament to the lasting impact of early childhood education. From playful learning experiences to a supportive community, Mi Escuelita provides a foundation that nurtures curiosity, resilience, and a passion for lifelong learning.
