Generation Connection
Abuelas are special people (I remember when my grandmother and I made my favorite meal together). Some of our toddler students won’t have these memories because their grandparents are not close by. Foster Grandparents are the next best thing. These volunteers have been with us for over 20 years, following us from our Maple Avenue campus to our newest campus in Garland, the Carolyn Strickland Early Childhood Center.
We celebrated the volunteers of The Senior Source Foster Grandparents program in Spring. Some of these volunteers, like Mr. Fabian Han and Ms. Yuping Feng, have been with us for decades. They have been and continue to be incredible “grandparents” to all Mi Escuelita students.
For example, Foster Grandparents introduced the Chinese New Year celebration. This has become the most anticipated annual event for the students and families of Mi Escuelita. Our students make the traditional dancing dragon and learn about different Asian cultures. The day of activities ends with students parading the dancing dragon with the Grandparents leading the way.
We are grateful for the collaboration with The Senior Source. The volunteers of the Foster Grandparents program have positively influenced hundreds of young students.
